Fewer Appeals After Bay Area Property Tax Assessments

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Property tax bills have gone out to home owners and businesses, and reaction around Northern California has been varied.
Listen  KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports

In Sacramento, for example, 40 percent of the property owners will receive reductions in assessed values, while the others will see an increase. This has prompted 1,500 appeals in Sacramento County alone.

But in nearby Contra Costa County, Assessor Gus Kramer says appeals are down.

”The average decrease, county-wide, property-wise for the tax rolls is a little over six percent,” said Kramer. “But the decrease in property values ranges anywhere from a couple percent in the very affluent neighborhoods, to almost 20 percent in the outlying far east, and far west ends of the county.

Unfortunately, lowered assessed values means less money to local governments.
