Santa Clara Outraged Over Swine Flu Vaccine

SANTA CLARA COUNTY (KCBS)  -- Santa Clara is the largest county in Northern California but at the bottom of the list when it comes to getting the swine flu vaccine.

Initially, only 8,800 doses of the H1N1 vaccine are expected in the county, which county executive Jeff Smith said is outrageous.

"We have about 800,000 individuals who would fall into the high risk inoculation pool. These are people who fall into the groups that are at the greatest risk for contracting H1N1," said Smith.

The public health department is also expressing concerns, according to spokeswoman Joy Alexiou.

"It's of a concern. It is disappointing in that, of course we want more vaccines," Alexiou said. "Because the vaccine is the best protection."

US Health Works in San Jose has just received 166 doses of the vaccine.

Managing physician Dr. Vik Moharir said they're prioritising who will get the shots.

"These groups are going to be number one, pregnant women. Number two, patients age 6 months to 24 years. Number three, health care and emergency medical service personnel," Moharir said.

Alexiou said that they were expecting about 26,000 doses of the vaccine initially.
