THE BEACHES OF AGNES
|
(not rated)
There was a time when the French new Wave was a vital part of any moviegoer's and cinema fan's language. Filmmakers like Truffaut, Godard, Alain Resnais, Demy, Rohmero and others influenced and inspired. Part of the exciting scene was Agnes Varda, and her films (Cleo From 5 to 7, The Gleaners and I, Vagabond) are still studied and admired. This documentary is Agnes Varda looking at her own life. The free-flowing, colorful examination of her artistic spirit also provides political and social context of a feisty young girl growing up in Vichy France. Forced to live under Nazi rule, we get a sense of the need for space and freedom of thought within Varda. She colors outside the lines, and the film reflects this sensibility. It's a journey that also takes us to Hollywood, the Cannes Film Festival, highs and lows in a life dedicated to telling her stories through cinema.
