Schools on the Ballot for Next Week's Election

ALBANY, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Many school districts around the Bay Area will be asking voters to help with funding in Tuesday's election.

Alameda, Marin, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties are appealing to voters to help them recover from over $17 billion in state budget cuts over the last two years.

ListenKCBS’ Barbara Taylor Reports

"Most of the classes increased class sizes, which makes it really difficult to get around to students, to provide the individualized instruction and help that we really want to do with the students," said Albany teacher Loring Barker.

Barker said his district has been forced to trim back all kinds of programs that students need to qualify for college admission.

Most of the districts are asking voters to approve a parcel tax that could be used to restore those cuts, but two districts in Marin County want bonds approved to renovate aging schools.

All told, there are ten school funding measures on next Tuesday's ballot.

The parcel taxes require a two-thirds majority, while the bond measures needs 55 percent approval.
