BART Surveys Riders

After posting record ridership numbers last week, BART wants to know what it needs to do to keep some of those new customers now that the Bay Bridge has reopened.

This bridge closure gave BART a unique opportunity to look at commute patterns in unusual circumstances. Who's getting on BART, where are they getting on and what do they like about it.

"I actually get home faster on this," one rider said. "I live in Pacifica and I get home quicker on BART than I would if I was driving.

Unfortunately, that rider says he's getting back behind the wheel because it's more convenient, especially when he works odd hours. That's the kind of data BART will be looking at to see how it can improve service. Chief spokesman Linton Johnson says there's a survey on the BART website that lets you speak out. He says already they're learning a lot.

El Cerrito del Norte station has the highest increase of all the BART stations because of this Bay Bridge closure," Johnson said. "And that's because they're so many transit options terminating right there."

BART officials felt they were putting drivers, mechanics and equipment to the test by having to accommodate so many riders. There were a record 442,000 last Thursday.
