SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- A San Jose animal control officer was severely mauled by two bulldogs Tuesday morning and will need surgery after being bitten nine times.
The attack happened after the dogs escaped from a nearby home and encountered the animal control officer who was responding to a call of the animals running loose in a South San Jose neighborhood.
KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports
San Jose police fired 11 shots, killing one of the dogs and wounding the other.
San Jose Police Sergeant Ronnie Lopez said this easily could have had deadly consequences.
"A dog attack is a vicious type of incident. Two dogs aggressively attacking an animal control agent with the extent of the injuries," Lopez said. "Had the officer's not been there, had there not been additional personnel there to prevent this from continuing, this could have been a deadly situation."
The animal control officer suffered nine bites to her arms, legs, buttocks and hips.
The dogs owner and a caretaker were arrested. City records show six previous complaints against the owner of the two dogs.
