Castro Rally Highlights Maine Vote, Prop. 8 Anniversary

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Voices of frustration echoed in the Castro District of San Francisco Wednesday night, as the gay community marked the one year anniversary of the passage of Proposition 8. Despite a recent vote in Maine repealing a state law legalizing same sex marriage, proponents of gay marriage are hopeful of a "marriage for all" future.

"We're here to protest against what happened in Maine and to say that we want full equality," said Regina Johnson with the group One Struggle One Fight, who stood at the corner of 18th and Castro with dozens of others - some even blocking traffic.

There were two arrests.

"I'm just out here voicing my frustration and my outrage that Question 1 passed in Maine," said one protestor. "Just a year ago we were dealing with Proposition 8, and it's unconscionable that this happened again. Civil rights should not be up for a mere majority vote."

Groups were there with petitions asking people to sign for repeal of Prop. 8 in 2010. Other groups would like to wait until 2012.
