SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- According to a new report from the Urban Land Institute, the average Bay Area household spends nearly 60 percent of its family income on housing and transportation.
The numbers released on Wednesday found that families spend on average, $41,000 a year.
The report called "Bay Area Burden" also found that 60 percent of the Bay Area housing market is cutoff to people who don't earn at least $80,000 a year.

Former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros said that families are moving farther out from work centers for affordable housing, but that can be a double-edged sword.
"These are not obstructions. These are realities," Cisneros said. "When people have to start out early in the morning and take their children to daycare at odd hours and stay at the workplace late in order to deal with the late commute, it shortens the times that they can spend with their children."
Cisneros said there are always ways to deal with this by building job centers near public transit, but he said the combined cost sometimes prevents families from obtaining the necessities of life.
