SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco police officers swarmed Municipal Transit Authority trains and buses Wednesday, looking to crack down on those breaking the rules.
The orders came down from Captain David Lazar during afternoon roll for officers from all over the city.
"We're going to be enforcing not only fare inspections, but people eating, drinking what have you," said Lazar. "It's a zero-tolerance approach to crime on Muni."

Although overall crime is down in San Francisco, crime on Muni is up.
San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Duffy heard about the new orders and stopped by the Tenderloin Police Station to get the details.
"I think that that's a smart way to focus resources, but I'm going to continue to ask the public to let me know that they see these officers riding," Duffy said.
Irwin Lum, the head of the transport workers union said he welcomes the new attention.
"I just hope that we sustain it. You know, not just for a short period, but it's an ongoing thing that happens," Lum said.
However, Captain Lazar gave no time commitments, raising questions about whether this new concentration of police on Muni will last for years, months, weeks or only a couple of days.
