SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- San Jose Unified School District has set a November 16 target date to begin a free, voluntary H1N1 vaccination program to inoculate all its 32,000 students against the widespread virus.
The only problem? The vaccine has to arrive on time.
The district is the largest in Santa Clara County and the only one planning to offer districtwide vaccinations.
Melinda Landau, the district’s manager for health and family support programs, said if things go according to plan, it will take ten days to inoculate all elementary school students, then another 6-7 days for the larger middle and high schools.
The district had hoped to start a pilot vaccination program at two schools in mid-October but it was scrapped following nationwide vaccine shortages.
Landau said the swine flu virus is spreading throughout the district. Just last week, 150 students were sent home from school with flu-like symptoms, more than double the normal amount during this time of year.
