SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- San Jose Unified is getting ready to offer voluntary vaccinations to all 32,000 students in the district and educators want to make sure students have their paperwork in order before rolling out the program.
The students will be sent home with consent forms Thursday and Friday.

”They ask questions like, ‘is your child allergic to eggs? Does your child have a chronic health problem such as asthma or diabetes?’ Things that we need to look at to determine if the vaccine should be given, and whether or not the mist or actual injection would be best for the child,” said San Jose Unified Health Care Services Manager Melinda Landau.
She says they’re also trying to get a good assessment of just how much of the vaccine they’ll need.
”It’s important for us to have the count because we need to know how many vaccines to order, and we need to know how many nurses need to be there,” said Landau. “We also need time to look at the forms, and to look for those contra-indications and make sure we’re giving the appropriate vaccine to the children.”
Landau says SJUD is believed to be the only district in the state to use school nurses to administer the vaccine.
