John Garamendi has resigned his position as Lieutenant Governor and was sworn in Thursday morning as a new representative in the House for the 10th district representing parts of Contra Costa, Alameda, Solano, and Sacramento counties.

"Madame speaker is it is a great privilege, indeed I suspect, the greatest privilege a person could have - to stand in the well of the House of Representatives of the United States of America and address this august body," said Garamendi. "It's a privilege that I shall always remember, as I'll always remember this particular moment."

Garamendi won a special election on Tuesday for a seat left open when Ellen Tauscher took a high level spot in the State Department. He is set to serve the rest of Tauscher's term, which ends in January of 2011.

His swearing-in ceremony comes two days before what could be a highly anticipated vote in the House on health care reform.

Meantime, Governor Schwarzenegger is tasked with choosing Garamendi's replacement for the lieutenant governor position.
