SF Budget Committee Fights City Layoffs

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The City of San Francisco is planning to layoff about 150 clerical and health care workers later this month, but the Supervisors' Budget and Finance Committee is trying to prevent that from happening.

SEIU, the city's largest labor union, packed the supervisors chambers this week, with city workers and their supporters hoping their sad circumstances would persuade the budget committee to come to the rescue.

This round of layoffs strikes 156 clerical and health care workers, some who are being bumped by others with more seniority.

”I’m one of those employees, and I’m asking you to please find the money, which I know you guys have,” said one employee. “If the clerical assignments are implemented on December 1st there will be a lot of disruption and chaos in many city departments for a long time.”

This latest round of layoffs has produced another battle of wills between the mayor's office, which says the funding isn't available, and the board's progressives who want to take $7 million out of the city's reserve to prevent the layoffs. The committee is recommending 7 million dollars in funding, but even if it's approved by the full board, the supervisors can't force the mayor to spend the money.
