BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS) -- A growing budget deficit has a group of UC Berkeley professors calling on the university to stop subsidizing its athletics department.
The question was debated at a jammed-packed Academic Senate meeting on Thursday.
The decision of the Academic Senate is non-binding and will only amount to a recommendation to the university. At issue are plans to give more than 13 and a half million dollars to Cal Athletics over the next two years, much of it from student registation fees. Tax dollars do not go to athletics.
KCBS' Chris Filippi reports
The money is supposed to be paid back, but the school has forgiven the debt in years past.
Some students at the meeting expressed how important they think an athletic program is while others talked about how the athletic department is running at a deficit.
Cal faces a $150 million budget deficit.
