Undocumented Residents Worried About Attending Flu Clinics

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - Health officials are holding free H1N1 flu vaccinations throughout the Bay Area tomorrow, but the vaccine will only be available for people at the highest risk for illness from the virus.

Meantime, KCBS's Mike Colgan reports that one of the big concerns now about the swine flu pandemic is that undocumented immigrants will be afraid to come forward to get vaccinated.

One of the big questions many undocumented immigrants have is whether they will be asked for a Social Security Number. County Supervisor Dave Cortese said the answer is no. "The public shouldn't have any fear, especially those that may not be sure that their documents are in order. Recent immigrants should not have any fear if they come into this process and get their flu vaccines, it's important for the rest of us that everybody's vaccinated," Cortese explained.

"There's no need for people to be afraid of asking for the shots," echoed San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. "Nobody cares what their citizenship status is when we're trying to deal with this public health crisis. It's a pandemic and we know that it's spreading throughout the community. We need everybody to be engaged."
