SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Caltrains were delayed up to 90 minutes Friday evening after an Altamont Commuter Express train fatally struck a pedestrian in San Jose. Meanwhile, Caltrain service in Redwood City was shut down for a time after another pedestrian was hit by a train and killed.
Officials say the first of the two incidents occurred in San Jose around 3:45 p.m. at Stockton Ave. and Emory St. near the College Park Caltrain station. The Northbound #4 ACE train had just left San Jose's Diridon Station when it struck an adult female pedestrian who appeared to be trying to cross the tracks.
KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports
Trains were single-tracked in the area, causing delays of up to 90 minutes.
The accident occured in an area used by some people as a shortcut. Caltrain had installed barbed wire fencing to deter pedestrians some years back.
The second incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at Maple Avenue in Redwood City when a Caltrain struck a man walking across the tracks.
These are the 14th and 15th fatalities on Caltrain's tracks this year, but Christine Dunn of Caltrain says there is no reason to believe that they were in any way connected.
Caltrain service through Redwood City was delayed through the final train at midnight.
