Dangerous Coastal Conditions

The U.S. Coast Guard is urging boaters and swimmers to stay away from the waters off the California coast this weekend as swells of up to 25 feet are expected.

The Coast Guard says people should avoid going near beaches or other low-lying coastal areas, where large waves can sweep even a strong swimmer away.

The warnings extends from Sonoma to Monterey Counties.

ListenKCBS' Ron Naso reports

San Francisco's Ocean Beach was full of onlookers watching the waves crash on the shore.

"It's wild," one woman said. "I was coming down Lincoln and I thought it was smoke or something."

A pier in Pacifica is closed and even surfers are warned to stay out of the water.

"There actually could be some breakers that are over 20 feet," said Rick Caneda, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. "There could be some rip currents and some localized beach erosion."

If boaters must be on the water, the agency says they should make sure their safety equipment is in good condition and tell someone on land where they are going and when they plan to return.

Condition are expected to improve by late Sunday night.
