SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has been keeping a low profile since returning from his vacation, and it\'s fueling speculation about his political future.
Newsom was reportedly holed up in his office all day yesterday, meeting with his chief of staff about the city hotel strike and avoiding interviews with reporters.
San Francisco Chronicle columnist C. W. Nevius says Newsom could have avoided the strong public reaction by issuing a press release explaining his absence.
"It\'s kind of taken on a life of its own," Nevius said about Newsom\'s absence. "For someone who really was the Golden Boy of California politics not that long ago, it\'s been kind of a shocking change."
Nevius says it seems far-fetched that the mayor will resign, and he thinks Newsom needs to show he\'s engaged and working hard for San Francisco.
Newsom left for Hawaii to join his wife and baby daughter shortly after he dropped out of the race for California governor.
