SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Caltrans is now backing off earlier reports that the Bay Bridge may be closed again before the Christmas holiday.
KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports
Caltrans had been holding out hope that permanent repairs could be made over the holidays when traffic volumes are much lighter. The span will need to be closed for one to four days for a permanent eye-bar fix.
“We will need to close the Bay Bridge once we actually put this into place. We’re in type selection right now, we might not know for another month until exactly when we’re going to do it,” said Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney. “There is a slight remote possibility that we might be able to do this by the end of the year. It’s much more likely that this will happen after the new year.”
Ney says daily inspections and lane closures will continue.
A Labor Day fix of the eye-bar failed, closing the bridge for nearly a week in late October, early November.
