SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- New reflective paint and increased enforcement by the California Highway Patrol are among the changes drivers might notice on the Bay Bridge.
Reflective striping now runs the entire length of the rail and concrete edging along what has been the scene of dozens of accidents since the detour section opened.
KCBS' Holly Quan reports
Traffic on both decks will be funneled into just two lanes between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. to force motorists to slow down, said CHP Officer Herman Quon.
“Typically any time traffic gets light speed goes up,” he told KCBS reporter Holly Quan. “Having people make a conscious effort to start moving either to the left or the right, hopefully, takes them out of the relaxed mode and focus back on their driving.”
Quon said the CHP would be aggressive about issuing tickets overnight. Since the lane changes on Wednesday night, 10 citations were issued and one drunk driver arrested.
There will be less emphasis on citing speeding motorists during the commute, Quon said, since the heavy traffic already slows the traffic to safer speeds.
