SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Officials are once again issuing a warning to stay away from wild mushrooms, unless you are an experienced mushroom gatherer. This comes after three people from Mexico were admitted to the intensive care unit at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco after eating “Death Cap” mushrooms.
KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports
This is not an isolated incident. Liver specialist Dr. Maurizio Bonacini says there are hospitalizations every year.
”Almost every single one of the patients that have been coming to our hospital are not natives of Northern California, and typically they say they thought it was the same mushroom they picked in Russia, or the Ukraine, or Palestine or wherever they came from,” said Bonacini.
Death Cap mushrooms have two toxins, one that is fast acting and gives you a stomach ache, and the other which destroys your liver. Ten percent of the people with these symptoms at CPMC die.
