Menlo Park Mom, Daughter Injured by Alleged Street Racers

MENLO PARK, Calif. (KCBS) - A 6-year-old girl and her mother were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a street racer hit their car and fled the scene Thursday afternoon in Menlo Park, police said.

Units responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Willow Road and Bayfront Expressway just before 2 p.m. Thursday, according to Menlo Park police.

A preliminary investigation indicated that two cars were street racing when one of them crashed into a third vehicle carrying the girl and her mother, police said.

The driver involved in the crash then got out and climbed into the other vehicle, according to police. The drivers fled the scene but left the wrecked car.

"We did get a license plate from there," Menlo Park police Sgt. Matthew Ortega said. "We're working on the investigation with the registered owner."

Ortega said detectives followed leads throughout the night.

He said there haven't been problems with street racing in the area where the crash happened, but it's a long, straight road that would appeal to street racers.

Anyone who might have witnessed the collision is encouraged to contact the Menlo Park Police Department at (650) 330-6300.
