NEWARK, Calif. (KCBS) -- Even a positive visit from President Obama's auto industry czar has left workers at Fremont's NUMMI plant wondering what is next.
Dr. Ed Montgomery visited the site Friday and said the federal government is ready to help workers who will lose their jobs if Toyota follows through with plans to pull out of NUMMI.
But Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson said he wants to find someone to keep the plant going.

"What further use of that property would take place, no one is sure of at this point," said Carson.
Carson said one group from China that manufactures cars has visited the Fremont plant.
The Alameda County Supervisor also said NUMMI is fully aware of its responsibilities to clean up the site.
"In this community, we've experienced a base closing in which there was environmental hazards and it took us a little while," Carson said. "And I think that not only our Congressional delegation, but everybody else is fully aware of that and we will move as expeditiously as a community, working with the appropriate owners of that property and the city to deal with that, with whatever assistance we can get."
Carson said if NUMMI closes, then 5,400 autoworkers will lose their jobs. He said more than 20,000 jobs at the facility's suppliers will also be affected.
