Grocery Store Opens in East Palo Alto

EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Imagine living in a community without a grocery store.

That's exactly what residents in East Palo Alto have had to deal with for over 20 years.

But Saturday morning, the city's only full-service grocery store, a Mi Pueblo Food Center opened to the public in the Gateway 101 Retail Center.

Perla Rodriguez with the store said the community needed this store.

"People here in East Palo Alto have been paying $5 for one gallon of milk in some cases at some of the local convenience stores," Rodriguez said. "They're excited to be able to have more affordable prices as well as a lot of healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables, which they haven't had in their local community."

The new supermarket has also created some 200 new jobs, including for new bag boy Diego Gallardo.

"It is hard to find a job these days and the other employees that I've met, they were also struggling to find jobs at other places," said Gallardo.

Hundreds of people have attended city council meetings to speak for and against the store since news broke in March that the San Jose-based company hoped to set up shop in East Palo Alto.
