New Affordable Housing for Seniors Opens in Chinatown

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The Chinatown Community Development Center is celebrating the donation of a 14 unit building for affordable housing, where many seniors will keep their homes.

The donated yellow building with the red Chinese roof design is at 1150 Grant Street.

"This is a very important building, given where it's located. It's right at the cusp between Chinatown, Broadway and North Beach. It's a highly visible building, and as you can see, it's a beautiful building," said Gordon Chin, the executive director of the Chinatown Community Development Center.

"It's very important in this economy that there is stability. So whether they are seniors or working people, having the comfort of affordable housing, and knowing you don't have to worry about that really makes life a lot easier," said Chin.

Maggie Mui is with Wells Fargo, which donated the building to be used for affordable housing. A Wells Fargo branch will remain on the bottom floor of the building.

"This is a good gesture to demonstrate our commitment to the Asian community because we believe that in order for the Wells Fargo to do well, the community has to do well," said Mui.

Wells Fargo has had a branch at this location for more than 90 years.
