SF to Pay Family of Woman Struck by City Worker

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The City of San Francisco is set to pay $1.75 million to the family of a 66-year old woman who was struck and killed by a Public Works employee while driving a city truck.

The accident occurred last April when 66-year-old Florencia Tiongco was crossing Bayshore Boulevard in the pedestrian crosswalk.

She was hit by Rosemary Stimmel, a ten-year veteran of the Department of Public Works.

The victim's family sued the city, claiming Stimmel failed to yield the right of way to a pedestrian and was driving recklessly at an excessive speed.

The city acknowledged fault and the Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the settlement on Tuesday.

San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty said it's hard to put a dollar sign on a person's life.

"For me, this is a tragedy that this woman, a 66-year-old mother of seven, with a husband lost her life and that someone driving a city vehicle was the cause of this," Dufty said. "And so, from the human standpoint, I just want to say that this is a terrible tragedy."

Stimmel is still employed by the city, but she is not allowed to drive. She's been off the job on disability for much of the past year and still faces disciplinary charges.
