UC Berkeley Students End Protests

BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Things have calmed down on the UC Berkeley campus after a large protest that began early Friday morning, including the partial takeover of a building by a group of demonstrators ended after 11 hours.

Frustration filled the air on UC campuses across the state as students protested the UC regents decision to increase tuition by 32 percent over the next two years.

Dozens of students and their supporters barricaded themselves inside one of the rooms on the 2nd floor of Wheeler Hall.

UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said police forced their way into the room where the protestors were located.

"To the best of my knowledge, there were very limited if any discussions. It was really an all-or-nothing position taken vis-a-vis their demands and we didn't have the ability or the inclination to meet those demands, particularly under duress," Mogulof said.

41 people were arrested and released including this man.

"Yeah, it's nice that we got out without major charges but none of our demands were met. This university just proved that it has no moral legitimacy whatsoever, no proper authority whatsoever. That the people spoke, the people organized, the people fought and the people were just met with violence."

The building was surrounded by hundreds of protestors who stood outside for hours as police created a perimeter outside the hall.

This was the third day of protests over student fee increases. There was also demonstrations Friday on the campuses of UC Davis and Santa Cruz.
