Health Etiquette for Holiday Travelers

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- The H1N1 flu virus has ushered in a new form of respiratory etiquette and as travellers join crowds on their way home for the holidays, they are being asked to pack some healthy habits.

Heading to grandma's for Turkey Day? Vanessa Cordova with the Alameda Public Health department says use some common sense.

ListenKCBS' Margie Shafer reports

"First of all if you are feeling unwell in any way, particularly if you have a fever, stay home," she said.

She advises offering a tissue to the person sneezing next to you on an airplane and says H1N1 has created a whole new etiquette about sneezing and coughing. She advises coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the crook of your elbow and then washing your hands.

Officials at the health department advise getting the H1N1 vaccine along with preventive strategies including exercise, sleep and eating right.
