Hayward Man Killed in Fight Over a Dog

HAYWARD, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Authorities are still looking for the suspect in the shooting death of a man in front of his 13-year-old daughter in Hayward last night.

Hayward police Lieutenant Chris Orrey tells KCBS that 38-year-old Thomas Cunningham was shot on B street near Vermont Street at around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials believe Cunningham and his daughter had just come from a liquor store where they had bought ice cream when one of two dogs they were walking approached a man on the sidewalk.

"One of their dogs approached the man who would end up being the suspect shooter, and he was unhappy with the dog approaching him and asked them to get the dog away from him," said Orrey. "They retrieved their dog, but the suspect and victim exchanged some words. The suspect became angry, pulled out a handgun and shot the victim right in front of his daughter."

The 13-year-old girl asked for help from employees at the liquor store. Paramedics arrived and transported Cunningham to Eden Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Orrey emphasizes that the dog that approached the suspect was not dangerous.
