HAYWARD, Calif. (KCBS) -- A 19-month-old Hayward boy drowned Wednesday in his family's swimming pool after opening a back door and slipping into the yard undetected.
Hayward police Lieutenant Larry Vargas said one of the boy’s parents found him floating face down in the pool around 10 a.m.
Emergency crews raced to the home in the 24000 block of Pontiac Street and the boy was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
He was pronounced dead at about 11 a.m.
Police are investigating the case as an accidental drowning. Investigators said the toddler was apparently able to open a door to the yard while one of his parents was distracted.
