The Challenge of Eating Healthy on $112 a Month

It's not easy feeding yourself on less than four dollars a day.

Yet that's the challenge facing a growing number of families on food stamps. The average food stamp allotment in California is $112 per person per month.

Healthy food, like fresh fruits and vegetables can be more expensive than packaged food , and that means low-income families often feel like they have to eat Top Ramen, says George Manalo-LeClair with the California Food Policy Analysts.

ListenKCBS' Rebecca Corral reports

Manalo-LeClair is hoping officials with the federal government will choose California to test out a program where rebates are given to food stamp recipients who buy fresh produce.

California passed legislation to do that, but the program wasn't implemented due to the budget crisis. Now federal officials have designated $20 million to test the program are in one state, and Manalo-LeClair says California has everything in place to be that pilot state.
