BART Train Derailed

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- BART is investigating a train derailment between the 12th Street and Lake Merritt stations in Oakland, after three of four wheels on the front car jumped the tracks.

The Oakland Fire Department assisted BART in evacuating the train, according to BART spokesman Linton Johnson.

The incident was reported at 10:30 a.m.

There were two injuries, one was a man who had a seizure after the train derailed, and the other was an elderly woman who has been transported to the hospital.

The train, which was headed to Richmond, is stuck in a tunnel between the two stations, Johnson said. Fire crews helped to evacuate the some 75 passengers, walking them through the tunnel to the 12th Street station.

"Trains go very slowly through that area," he said.

The incident has caused only minor service disruptions so far, Johnson said shortly before 11 a.m.

BART has numerous tracks and tunnels in the area, he said, and there are many options for routing trains. Johnson said passengers coming from San Francisco may experience minor delays.
