The KCBS/Barbeques Galore bocce team scored a stunning upset of John Madden's team in first-round action at the 2007 Madden/Mariucci Charity Bocce Tournament and then made it as far as the Elite Eight before bowing to the All-Madden team in a tense rematch.
The luck of the draw saw the rookie KCBS team pitted against Madden's veteran crew in the first match of the afternoon. Nursing a 4-0 lead as the time clock wound down, the KCBS squad was stunned when Madden's team scored 4 points in the final frame. The tie score sent referees scurrying, and the decision was sent down from tournament officials: a one-ball roll-off to decide the match.
Madden named himself to roll for his side, and waved KCBS Morning Anchor Stan Bunger to the line to oppose him. Rolling first, Madden's ball was long. Bunger then crouched at the line and nailed the victory with a near-perfect roll (see video). |
