NEWARK, Calif. (KCBS) -- More than 500 foster care children in Fremont, Newark and Union City got bikes and toys for Christmas thanks to $10,000 in donations collected by NUMMI workers who are facing an uncertain future themselves.
KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports
29 Children from four to 13 years old got brand new bikes.
Ron Lopez, who has worked at the NUMMI plant for almost 20 years, says they were able to collect the money in less than two weeks.
”They don’t have what we have right now,” said Lopez. “Even if we shut down, we’re going to collect unemployment and we’re still going to have a little bit. This is part of giving back to the community.”
Debbie Caravalho, director of the Viola Blythe Community Center, said that they tried to select the families most in need.
”Some of them have never had a bike before. Some of them are in shelters, others in hotels,” said Caravalho. “We’re seeing new people coming in for the first time.”
