PALO ALTO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Stanford doctor Eric Weiss was the first to look at the concept of using cars as a moving exam rooms.
"Patients wait in their own vehicles, which limits person to person transmission of disease," said Weiss who's medical director of the Office of Emergency Management at Stanford Hospital and Lucille Packard Children's Hospital.
KCBS' Patti Reising reports
Weiss tested a drive-through flu clinic in the fall. He used a parking garage, which he heated.
It's not designed for critically ill people, Weiss said.
"Most of these patients are going to be able to go home and not require either X-ray or lab testing or to be admitted," he said.
Weiss says he's so satisfied with the results, he and his colleagues have developed as a model for use by other hospitals
"The drive-through clinic is an excellent way to see large numbers of patients while mitigating the effects of infectious diseases," he said.
