Growing Debate Over Mt. Diablo Name Change

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A move to rename Mt. Diablo in Contra Costa County has caught the attention of county supervisors, who said they will go on record opposing the name change to Mt. Reagan.

Oakley resident Arthur Mijares considers the name Mt. Diablo derogatory and profane, because the word diablo is Spanish for devil.

He’s trying for a name change again, this time to honor the late former president Ronald Reagan.

Bernadette Pettit went to a high school in Concord named after the mountain.

"I went to Mt. Diablo, home of the devils. I'm not a bad person and I highly believe in god, but come on," Pettit said.

County supervisor Susan Bonilla said e-mails against the change are taking up computer space.

"We've actually had a very large number of emails come in on this issue," Bonilla said. "People that normally would not contact their local county supervisor have really responded on this issue."

County supervisors will go on record February 23 as officially opposing the proposed name change.

Attempts to reach Mr. Mijares for comment were unsuccessful. He told the Contra Costa Times that he’s a devout Christian who’s waging war against the devil. The name Mt. Diablo has been on U.S.G.S. topographic maps since 1896.
