SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- There could soon be a flashier look to downtown San Jose, after the city council gave the thumbs up to larger electronic signs for businesses.
KCBS’ Matt Bigler Reports
Businesses in San Jose have long complained about the city’s restrictive, out of date sign ordinance.
”I would say our present ordinance is actually archaic,” said San Jose Councilmember Pete Constant. “So we want to streamline it, simplify it, and broaden it so we can have vibrant signs that promote business.”
On Tuesday night the council gave the go-ahead for business to have larger, programmable, electronic signs. The ordinance would also apply to theaters, stadiums and churches.
Some small businesses have complained that they’re being left out of the right to display flashy signs.
The council still has to give final approval to the ordinance some time in June.
