SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The Republican race for U.S. Senate in California has taken a wild and woolly turn with an unusual new ad by Carly Fiorina that has gone viral on the Internet, and may be backfiring.
KCBS’ Doug Sovern Reports
It's an attack video like no other, three minutes of ominous music and roaming sheep. Sort of a mash-up of "The Omen" and "Monty Python," or maybe it's 4-H meets Ann Coulter. The Internet-only spot takes on Senate candidate Tom Campbell, portraying him as a red-eyed "demon sheep," crawling around a field among docile sheep who apparently represent true fiscal conservatives.
"Tom Campbell, is he what he tells us? Or is he what he's become over the years- a F-C-I-N-O, a fiscal conservative in name only, a wolf in sheep's clothing?" asks the voiceover in the ad.
Julie Soderlund, Carly Fiorina's deputy campaign director, isn't worried about the scorn being heaped upon her candidate on the web for this creation.
"The intent was for the ad to be different, shocking, something somebody would look at and say, 'what on earth is that? I have to blog about it, I have to post about it!'" said Soderlund. "Whatever their reaction was, our goal was to get as many eyeballs as possible on the ad, and I think we accomplished that particular goal."
The Campbell campaign released a statement saying, "This bizarre video shows the Fiorina campaign is in complete meltdown mode."
By the way, Soderlund confirms, this is recycled stock footage, apparently from some previous demon sheep campaign ad. You can see the demon sheep for yourself here.
