SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) - San Francisco's new police chief took a stroll through Chinatown to let merchants know they're not alone.
This is the time of year when extortion is typically on the rise.
Generosity is a major part of the Lunar New Year. In this, the Year of the Tiger, some will prey on the good will of others. "There are those who wish to take advantage of good luck traditions by introducing strong arm tactics and protection rackets to new and existing businesses," warned police captain Anna Brown, who along with other commanders joined chief George Gascon in shaking hands with merchants.

Gascon told shopkeepers that they don't have to put up with this type of crime. "Extortion, burglaries, robbery, people that are willing to take the opportunity of the season in order to take advantage of others," he outlined the risks this time of year.
The chief's visit was well received.
Since the crime prevention campaign began a dozen years ago, extortion around the Lunar New Year has dropped dramatically.
