Goya's Ghosts
|
Rated R
It is rare to find a film based on a historical character that leaves one running to the library or computer to learn more. This film is provocative, exciting, intelligent..from the same director and producer of Amadeus. We meet artist Franciso Goya (Stellan Skarsgard) , daring the Inquisition wit satiric imagery of church and state. Yes..it is a few years after the actual Inquisition, but one member of the church (Javier Bardem) is determined to bring back the techniques and ideas from that frightening time. Natalie Portman proves she is a suprisingly strong actress as a girl caught up in the anti-semitism and insanity of the time. As Bardem's character survives despots and political upheavals, director Milos Foreman makes the action and characters relevant and razor sharp. A great film about a remarkable artist and his times.
