From Oklahoma to Call Me Madam..musicals when they are at their best leave us singin' in the rain. Happily, this new movie, based on the John Waters original film, gets it just right. We meet a vivacious high school girl (newcomer Nikki Blonsky) determined to dance on a local TV show. There's a deeper commitment to her quest: at a time of institutionalized and social racism, she wants the show integrated. The period of the early 1960's is recreated with detail, the acting ensamble from John Travolta in drag (it takes a moment to get used to) to Michele Pfeiffer perfect as a villainess we love to hate, from Queen Latifah to the energetic James Marsden and Elijah Kelly...this is one fun ride. It is the tone and big heart that really makes this musical sing. A special hats off to director and choreographer Adam Shankman..a joyous four hats.
