Early Risers Catch Lunar Eclipse

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Many early risers caught a glimpse of the longest total lunar eclipse in ten years in the hours before sunrise today.

The Earth's shadow covered the moon completely around 3 a.m., turning the moon a rusty red color. The spectacle impressed many at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, which hosted a viewing night.

“This one was, I think personally, the most beautiful one I've seen for some reason. The air was very clear tonight. We didn't have any fog problems. The moon became very dark, which allowed you to see the rich, red tones that the lunar eclipse becomes,” said astronomer Ben Burris.

Of the 230 lunar eclipses happening for this century—two of them happened already this year—only 85 are total eclipses.

If you missed it, not to worry. There be another next February.
