UC Riverside Study: Indian Casinos Benefit Area Communities
|
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- A study released today shows Indian casinos in California improve tribal life as well as the economic fortunes of communities living within 10 miles of the gambling halls.
A UC Riverside analysis of 1990 and 2000 census data says income levels for families living near reservations with Indian casinos rose 55 percent. The median income for families more than 10 miles from a gambling reservation rose 33 percent during the decade.
UC Riverside's Center for California Native Nations says the state's Indian casinos brought jobs and reduced welfare dependence on reservations and surrounding areas, which had mostly been poorer areas needing economic development.
The researchers say benefits include significant increases in incomes and educational attainment and reductions in poverty, especially in the poorest regions of the state.
In 2000, California voters approved Las Vegas-style gambling at Indian casinos. There were 39 Indian casinos and 20,684 Las Vegas-style slot machines in California in 2000, and five years later there were 55 casinos and 58,721 slot machines.
