More Employers Checking Applicants' Credit Score

graphicSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- More than half of the Bay Area residents surveyed don't know that a low credit score could sabotage their chances of landing a job, according to Visa USA.

Credit scores are usually associated with loans and credit cards, but more companies are starting to use them as screening tools, said Jason Alderman, director of financial education for Visa.

"Just as they ask you to take a drug test or a criminal background test, they ask you if they can pull your credit score," he said. "And so if you're applying for a job, you're probably going to say, "yes"... and if they don't like what they see, another well qualified applicant is likely to get the job."

The survey also found that 40 percent of Bay Area residents have never checked their credit score, compared with 42 percent of people nationwide.
