San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS) -- The San Francisco Fire Department knocked down a four-alarm fire in the city's South of Market neighborhood Monday afternoon.
Flames and smoke billowed out of the three-story Victorian-style apartment building on Clara Street for at least an hour as firefighters poured water onto the roof.
When the roof opened up the fire released a massive amount of black smoke.”We gave an evacuation order” because the roof became unstable San Francisco Fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge told KCBS reporter Mark Seelig at the scene. At around 3:20 p.m., firefighters starting to make significant progress on the fire.
The deli and liquor store "obviously will have some damage," she said.
The fire had spread to a neighboring, inhabited apartment building, but the residents are not in danger, according to Talmadge.
The American Red Cross is helping to find housing for those displaced by the fire.
