SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has called for striking security guards and the companies they work for to meet and settle their contract dispute.
"I am troubled that although the contract in question expired on June 30, only four sessions to date have been held,'' Newsom said in a statement.
Newsom asked that "commercial building owners, although not parties to the dispute, assert a greater role in fostering a quick resolution between the security guards and security guard companies.''
Security officers seeking increased wages and better training walked off the job Monday morning, forming picket lines in front of 14 buildings in the financial district, according to Service Employees International Union Local 24/7 spokeswoman Gina Bowers.
Picket lines could be found at 1 Front St., 333 Market St. and 50 Fremont St., among other locations.
In addition to better training and increased wages, SEIU Labor 24/7 is asking for adequate health benefits for the 4,000 Bay Area security officers it represents that are currently working without a contract, Bowers said.
